Project Description: Consumer Electronics

Design Team: Cesaroni Design & ArialPhone

Cesaroni Design and ArialPhone Corporation developed a new device targeted toward small office and home office professionals. Our client wanted to take communication products to the next level by launching a product that would open a new market category.

The project objective was to give the user an affordable tool to become more productive with free movements. The new device became a fashion accessory. The final design had to be something that people felt comfortable wearing.

Weight and mass distribution were critical factors in our new product design and development process. Hundreds of ear hook shapes were developed and user tested to receive feedback on the look and feel of the device. The form was continuously refined to reduce the size and gain a slim appearance.

This device was a sensitive aesthetic issue. The new product design needed a distinctive look and feel to differentiate this device from a hearing aid. This was done through form factors and color studies.

The overall form reflects a bold change in technology. This wireless voice activated product is comprised of an earpiece and base station. The lightweight 1¼-ounce earpiece is comfortable for the user to wear for long periods of time. An inventive ear hook with elliptical stabilization wings securely holds the device.

Battery integration into the base station reflects the ear set form and is a functional design. A vertical base station saves desk space. Recessed cutouts on the sides give the user room to remove the battery. This communication device is injection molded plastic with snap fit parts for ease of assembly.
