Project Description: Consumer Electronics

Design Team: Cesaroni Design & Life Fitness

Cesaroni Design, along with Life Fitness, created an interactive exercise product to merge home fitness equipment with Super Nintendo. The project goal was to functionally and visually integrate home fitness equipment and home video entertainment through the development of ergonomic hand controllers to enhance interactive play.

Our industrial designers first developed the controllers through a series of clay form studies using the original electronic configuration of Super Nintendo controllers. We pursued a sporty look from the clay form studies.

As form development moved forward, we developed prototype models to physically represent the new product design as closely as possible. Ergonomic standards were resolved during prototype development and focus group research. The prototype model analysis and research results determined that users desire a comfortable form to grasp with easy to use thumb-operated controls.

The interactive product experience is designed to motivate the user through exercise. Physical controls and user activity on the exercise bike directly correlate to the onscreen game. The overall design language suggests a fun workout.
