Stenograph Corporation
Diamante™ Shorthand Writer
This device is used by court reporters to document testimony in legal proceedings. Joint efforts from Stenograph's engineering staff and Cesaroni Design developed the smallest and lightest machine on the market, weighing only 4.5 pounds.
We worked closely with our client from initial concepts through prototype build to ensure that modifications to the current model, such as overall size reduction, weight reduction, part reduction, etc., worked well together.
Graceful curves sculpted in the enclosure create an elegant form. The enclosure lends itself to a clamshell part breakup while producing a desirable color composition.
The project team used a minimum amount of material to reduce the overall product weight. Cesaroni Design's product designers employed a single wall construction on the key deck, making the top of the bottom and the bottom of the top. We met highly specific durometers on several parts for tactile details and noise reduction. All parts mount to a die-cast aluminum chassis to reduce part count and simplify assembly.
This device features a 60% larger LCD display, as compared to the previous model, for optimum viewing. Integrating this design component into the new product was particularly challenging for the design team since the weight of the device needed to be reduced. A new mechanism adjusts the display to improve readability in different lighting conditions. The flat panel folds face down to protect the screen when not in use.
A critical design element for a courtroom setting is the noise keystrokes produce. Key levers are designed to suppress the sound of each key stroke. Located on each side of the top enclosure are two thumb wheels that change the tension and depth of the keyboard. Function buttons are strategically placed above the keyboard for users to interact with onscreen menus. The recessed back panel gives the user access to the plug deck for data storage, file transfer and audio capabilities.
